If you are applying for an F-1 or J-1 visa, we also need a statement from a bank (or scholarship letter) showing sufficient funds and a copy of the photo page of your passport. These documents may be sent by mail, fax, or scanned into a computer and emailed. If you would be attending on a different kind of visa, please let us know so we can tell you what documents you need in addition to the application form and application fee.

Terms of study in the IEP are eight weeks in length. The schedule of classes and the list of costs are as follows (Fall II and Spring II sessions are nine weeks because of Thanksgiving break and Spring break):

Summer 2010: May 17 - July 9
Fall I 2010: August 9 - October 1
Fall II 2010: October 11 - December 10
Spring I 2011: January 10 - March 4
Spring II 2011: March 7 - May 6
Summer 2011: May 16 - July 8

The costs are as follows (per 8-week term):

Application Fee: $50 (one-time only)
Tuition and fees: $1,820
International student fee: $109*
Materials Fee: $15
Books (estimate): $125
Medical insurance (required, and subject to change; if you already have insurance, please have your insurance provider document the coverage for us): $166 - $261 (it varies)
Housing and Meals (estimated): $1,450
Personal Expenses (estimated): $440
ID card (one-time only): $5

*Actually, this is charged once during the Fall (either Fall I or Fall II), once during the Spring (either Spring I or Spring II), and during the Summer

Overall, the statement of financial responsibility will need to show $4,182 per term of ESL study. A student does not need to SPEND this amount. The amount is merely a formula the university uses in determining how long a period of study to put on the I-20. (For example, if a student lives with a relative, there would be no rent, but the student still needs to show enough money for rent.)

Classes are offered at levels of English language proficiency ranging from high beginning - advanced. All levels have the same class hours, however, which are as follows:

9:00 - 10:50: Core Skills - speaking, writing, and grammar (Monday - Friday)
11:00 - 11:50: TOEFL Preparation (Monday - Friday); this class is not required
1:00 - 1:50: Reading/Vocabulary (Monday - Friday)
2:00 - 2:50: Listening/Speaking (Monday - Friday)

HOUSING: We can assist students in finding housing. On-campus dormitory space is very hard to find. In part, it depends on the time of year. We also work with a private dormitory across the street from campus and with several clean, reasonably priced apartment complexes. There is a person on my staff who specializes in finding housing for students in the Intensive English Program.

DEADLINES: Applications involving I-20 forms should be received in our office 30 days before the start of a term.

RESTRICTIONS: The IEP is available to those who are at least 17 years of age and who have completed high school.

REFUNDS: Consistent with Auburn University policy for sessions less than a semester in length, no refund of tuition is allowed after the first 5 class days of an 8-week term. Students leaving the IEP during the first 5 days of a term will be refunded full tuition minus $45.50 per day that they attended. There is no discounted tuition for late arrival to the program.

I hope this is the information you need, but please feel free to contact me if I can provide additional assistance of any kind.

Sincerely,

Daniel Raffalovich, Ph.D.
